South Africa lock in series win

gibbsSouth Africa has retained its number one ODI ranking, after sealing a series victory against Australia.

The 61-run victory in the fourth match at Port Elizabeth means South Africa holds an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, with one game to play.

The win came on the back of Herschelle Gibbs’ 21st one-day century – his first since returning to the side after a stint in rehab – as the hosts reached an intimidating 317-6.

All of Australia’s bowlers went for about a run a ball, as South Africa made Ricky Ponting’s decision to field look a little foolish. 35-year-old Shane Harwood – picked due to Brett Geeves’ foot injury – secured two wickets on debut but the scalps came at a cost: 57 runs from his 10 overs.

In response the visitors began positively, courtesy of a 129-run opening stand between Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke. But once the partnership was broken and the spinners were employed, the total always seemed like it would be too much.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Roelof van der Merwe was particularly impressive, as he removed Clarke and two of Australia’s middle order to cripple the chase. His economy rate of 4.60 was miserly when compared to Australia’s Nathan Hauritz, who conceded more than 7 an over.

While Australia – or at least those without IPL commitments – will leave South Africa with a satisfying Test victory, the limited overs team is not faring so well. In the 9 one-day games played at both home and away, South Africa leads 7-2. There’s no doubt about who is number one now.
